These images of creatures in China, taken by a foreigner, may be misinterpreted as a condemnation of Chinese attitudes towards animals. However, my intention is to prompt reflection on larger systems in which most of us are complicit. As cruel as it may be to use living creatures for amusement in Chinese fairgrounds, arcades, and shopping malls, people around the world treat pets as playthings, while factory farms are inflicting suffering on a far larger scale. Whether animals are toyed with or consumed, the logic of commodifying life is the same.
